Online Fax for New York Government Agencies
Albany agencies and local offices across New York still rely on fax for tax correspondence, permit applications, and interagency records. The Department of Taxation and Finance, the DMV, and the Office of the State Comptroller all process faxed documents, and any fax an agency sends or receives can become a record subject to a public request.
Regulations & Compliance
New York's Freedom of Information Law, found in Article 6 of the Public Officers Law, makes government fax transmissions disclosable like other records, so agencies have to be able to locate and produce them. Retention is set by the schedules published through the New York State Archives and Records Administration, and the Office of General Services issues standards for how agencies manage and transmit documents. Keeping complete transmission logs is what lets an office answer a FOIL request quickly rather than digging through fax confirmation slips.
